Hebrews 10:24-25
(NLT)
24
Let us think of ways to motivate one another
to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our
meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another,
especially now that the day of his return is drawing near.

"DRAWING CLOSE TO GOD"
The Proud
verses the Humble
James 4:1-10
(NLT)
1
What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come
from the evil desires at war within you? 2
You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You
are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight
and wage war to take it away from them.
Yet you don’t
have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.
3 And even when you ask, you don’t get it
because your motives are all wrong—you want only what will give you
pleasure.
4
You adulterers! Don’t you realize that friendship with the world
makes you an enemy of God? I say it again: If you want to be a
friend of the world, you make yourself an enemy of God.
5
What do you think the Scriptures mean when they say that the spirit
God has placed within us is filled with envy?
6 But he gives us even more
grace
to stand against such evil desires. As the Scriptures say,
“God opposes the proud
but favors the humble.”
7
So humble yourselves before God.
Resist
the devil, and he will flee from you.
8
Come close to
God, and God will come close to you.
Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty
is divided between God and the world. 9
Let there be tears for what you have done. Let there be sorrow and
deep grief. Let there be sadness instead of laughter, and gloom
instead of joy.
10 Humble yourselves
before the Lord,
and he will lift you up in honor.
1 Peter 5-11
5
In the same way, you younger men must accept the authority of the
elders. And all of you, serve each other in humility, for
“God opposes the proud
but favors the humble.”
6
So humble
yourselves
under the mighty power of God, and at the right time
he will lift
you up in honor.
7 Give all your worries and cares to God, for he
cares about you.
8
Stay alert!
Watch out for
your great enemy, the devil.
He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.
9 Stand firm against him,
and be strong in
your faith.
Remember that your Christian brothers and sisters all over the world
are going through the same kind of suffering you are.
10
In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by
means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he
will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on
a firm foundation. 11 All power to him
forever! Amen.
Proverbs 3:34
34
God sets himself
against the proud
but he shows favor to the humble.
Psalm 18:27
18 You rescue
those who are humble,
but you humiliate the proud.
Psalm 138:6
6
Though the Lord is great
He cares for the humble,
but He keeps his distance from the proud.
Psalm 147:6
6 The Lord supports the humble,
but He brings the wicked down to the dust.
Galatians 5:23
(Humbling
ourselves by living through the fruits of the spirit).
13
For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and
sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your sinful nature.
Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love.
14 For the whole law can be summed up in
this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
15 But if you are always biting and
devouring one another, watch out! Beware of destroying one another.
Living by the Spirit’s Power
16
So I say, let the Holy Spirit guide your lives. Then you won’t be
doing what your sinful nature craves. 17
The sinful nature wants to do evil, which is just the opposite of
what the Spirit wants. And the Spirit gives us desires that are the
opposite of what the sinful nature desires. These two forces are
constantly fighting each other, so you are not free to carry out
your good intentions. 18 But when you are
directed by the Spirit, you are not under obligation to the law of
Moses.
19
When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are
very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures,
20 idolatry, sorcery, hostility,
quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition,
dissension, division, 21 envy,
drunkenness, wild parties, and other sins like these. Let me tell
you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life
will not inherit the Kingdom of God.
22
But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, and self-control. There is
no law against these things!
24
Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and
desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them
there. 25 Since we are living by the
Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our
lives. 26 Let us not become conceited, or
provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.

Philippians 4:8-9

And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing.
Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and
pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are
excellent and worthy of praise. 9 Keep
putting into practice all you learned and received from me—everything
you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be
with you.
